The Washer Problem That Doesn’t Go Away on Its Own
Most washer issues don’t start as breakdowns. It’s usually a smell, vibration, or buildup around the door gasket. Over time, that turns into mold, residue inside the drum, and a washer that never really feels clean.
Quick fixes don’t solve this. Wiping the gasket or running a cleaner might help for a bit, but the source is usually deeper — inside the drain system, pump, or internal components.
At Pegasus, we don’t just treat the symptom. Every repair includes a full inspection of the drum, gasket, and drain path to make sure the issue is actually resolved — not temporarily masked.
This is why homeowners and landlords across Southern Ontario trust us. We get washers running clean, stable, and usable again.
Still dealing with that washer smell? Here’s why it’s often not the washer itself.

Washing Machine Maintenance Tips
Want to keep your washer running smoothly for years and avoid unexpected breakdowns? Our repair experts see the same preventable issues on jobs every week. Here are a few simple, practical tips that actually make a difference for homeowners like you:
-
Inspect your washing machine’s hoses and fittings.
A burst hose is one of the most common (and messy) calls we get. Every few months, take 30 seconds to check the hoses behind your machine for cracks, bulges, or fraying. If anything looks worn, replace it right away.
We strongly recommend stainless-steel hoses — they last much longer than the rubber ones that come with most machines. Changing them every 3–5 years is cheap insurance against a flooded laundry room.
-
Position your washing machine properly.
Give your washer at least 4 inches of breathing room from the wall so hoses don’t kink or rub. And make sure it sits perfectly level — even a slight tilt causes extra vibration that wears out bearings and suspension parts faster.
Most machines have adjustable legs you can simply twist to level them. It takes two minutes and can add years to your washer’s life.
-
Don’t overload your washing machine.
Bigger loads may seem efficient, but they put serious stress on the drum, bearings, and motor. Stick to the manufacturer’s recommended maximum load size — your machine will run quieter, cleaner, and last longer.
-
Use the right amount and type of detergent.
Too much detergent (or the wrong kind) is one of the fastest ways to shorten your washer’s life. High-efficiency machines especially need low-sudsing HE detergent — check your manual and measure carefully.
Less really is more. Excess suds leave residue that builds up in hoses and the drum, leading to odors and poor performance.
-
Remove finished laundry loads immediately.
Wet clothes left sitting in a closed washer are a recipe for mildew and that musty smell nobody wants. As soon as the cycle ends, move the load to the dryer or at least crack the door open to let air circulate.
Leaving the door open after every wash is one of the easiest habits you can build to keep your machine smelling fresh.
-
Clean your washing machine once per month.
Your washer cleans your clothes — but who cleans the washer? Detergent buildup and grime inside the drum and hoses cause most long-term problems we see.
Once a month, run an empty hot cycle with 2 cups of white vinegar in the dispenser and 1 cup of baking soda straight in the drum. Follow it with a second rinse cycle. Wipe the door seal and exterior while you’re at it — it takes 10 minutes and keeps things fresh.
-
Regularly clean out the drain pump filter.
Hair, lint, coins, and socks love to hide in the drain pump and cause clogs, vibrations, or drainage issues. Most machines have an easy-access filter behind a small door at the bottom front.
Check and clean it every 4–6 weeks — it’s quick and prevents a lot of emergency service calls.
Washing Machine Repair FAQs
Here are the questions we hear most often from homeowners, landlords, and property managers across Southern Ontario:
-
How do I stop my washing machine from shaking?
Shaking or walking across the floor is usually caused by an unbalanced load or a machine that’s not sitting level. First, try smaller loads and make sure the machine is perfectly level (you can adjust the feet by twisting them). If it still shakes violently, the suspension springs or drum bearings may be worn. Give us a call — we can usually fix it on the first visit.
-
What should I do if my washing machine is spinning too fast or making loud noises?
Loud grinding, banging, or vibrating during the spin cycle almost always points to worn drum bearings, a broken suspension part, or an unbalanced drum. It’s best not to keep running it — the longer it goes, the more damage it can cause. Call us and we’ll diagnose and repair it quickly so you can get back to normal laundry days.
-
Why won’t my washing machine water get hot?
Most of the time this isn’t a washer problem at all — it’s your home’s hot water supply. Check that your water heater is working and that the hot water valve behind the machine is fully open. If the rest of the house has hot water but the washer doesn’t, give us a quick call and we’ll check the inlet valve on the machine.
-
Why won’t my front-loading washing machine drain or spin?
Front-loaders are great at cleaning but they’re more prone to drainage issues. The most common fix is a clogged drain pump filter (usually behind a small door at the bottom front of the machine). Clean it out first — it takes five minutes. If it still won’t drain or spin, the pump itself may need replacing. We can usually take care of it the same day.
-
Why is my washing machine making humming noises but not filling with water?
A humming sound with no water usually means the water inlet valve is stuck or the drain pump is trying to run but can’t. First, make sure the water valves behind the machine are fully open. If they are, the inlet valve or pump is likely the culprit. We see this often and can usually swap the part in one visit so you’re not stuck without clean clothes.
-
Do you charge a service call or diagnostic fee?
Yes — our diagnostic service call is $99. This fee covers the technician coming to your home and doing a proper diagnosis so you get a clear, upfront quote before any work begins. If you decide to proceed with the repair, the full $99 is applied directly toward the cost of the repair. No hidden fees, no surprises — ever.
