Is my old Maytag top-load washer worth repairing?
Almost always yes — and we’d rather fix one than see it replaced. The older Maytag top-loaders built before Whirlpool took over in 2006 (Dependable Care, Performa and the classic two-belt models) are simpler and tougher than most washers sold today. The usual failures are belts, the brake or clutch, water pump, lid switch, timer and tub dampers — all inexpensive and mostly still available. If yours fills, agitates and drains but has one bad habit, it’s usually a single-part repair for a machine that can run another decade.

Why is my Maytag Bravos or Centennial washer loud, leaking or not spinning?
These are the Whirlpool-platform Maytags. Bravos (Cabrio platform) is famous for tub bearing failure — a loud roar on spin, sometimes with water under the machine from the tub seal. It’s repairable but labour-heavy, so it’s a judgment call on an older unit. Centennial and other VMW-platform washers usually fail at the lid lock, the shifter/actuator that switches between agitate and spin, or the suspension rods. F7E1 or F7E5 codes point at the motor/shifter; F5E2 or F5E3 at the lid lock. Most are one-part repairs.

Why is my Maytag dryer running but not heating?
On Maytag electric dryers the heating element breaks, or the thermal fuse and high-limit thermostat open because of restricted airflow. A dryer that takes two cycles has a lint-blocked vent or a failing moisture sensor. Older Maytag dryers with the rear-mounted motor also wear out drum rollers and the idler pulley, which shows up as squealing or thumping. Whatever we replace, we clean the internal lint path and check the vent on the same visit.

Why is my Maytag dishwasher not draining or not cleaning?
Not draining: clogged filter or sump, a kinked hose, or a failed drain pump — Maytag’s stainless-tub dishwashers use a separate drain pump that fails on its own. Not cleaning: a failed wash pump motor (fills and hums but no spray), a blocked or cracked spray arm, or a failed diverter. On Maytag dishwashers with a Clean light that blinks in a pattern, it’s the same code system as Whirlpool and KitchenAid — seven blinks is a heating fault.

My Maytag fridge is warm but the freezer works. Is it the compressor?
Usually not. Current Maytag fridges are Whirlpool-built, and this symptom is almost always the evaporator fan, a defrost failure that’s iced over the evaporator, a stuck damper or a thermistor. Maytag’s own older fridges from the Amana/Maytag era are worth a look too — the sealed systems on those were solid, and it’s usually a fan or defrost part. We test the sealed system last. We’re ODP certified if it comes to that.

Are parts for older Maytag appliances still available?
Better than for most old brands. Whirlpool still supplies many parts for the pre-2006 Maytag washers and dryers — belts, pumps, lid switches, rollers, elements — and the aftermarket covers most of the rest. What’s gone is some timers, control panels and cosmetic parts for the oldest units. For anything Whirlpool-era (2006 onward) availability is excellent. We check by your model number before recommending a repair.

Does Maytag’s 10-year warranty cover my repair?
Maytag’s 10-year limited warranty covers specific parts only — typically the drive motor and stainless basket on washers, the drive motor and drum on dryers — and not labour or any other component. If your failure is one of those parts and the unit is under 10 years old, call Maytag (Whirlpool Canada) first. Pegasus doesn’t do warranty work for any brand; we handle everything out of warranty, which for a Maytag is nearly every repair after year one.
