KitchenAid French Door Refrigerator – Door Repair Solution

This repair involved a KitchenAid French door refrigerator where the fridge temperature began rising due to a door that was not sealing properly. What initially appeared to be a gasket issue turned out to be a structural problem with the door itself.

In this video, our technician demonstrates how the damaged hinge area was rebuilt and restored so the door aligns and seals properly again.

Issue – Refrigerator Door Not Sealing Properly

The refrigerator was warming up because the right-side door was not closing and sealing as it should. On inspection, the hinge mounting area on the door was found to be completely broken, preventing proper alignment and allowing warm air into the fridge compartment.

Diagnosis

The manufacturer-approved repair would require replacing the entire right-side door. The part cost was approximately $800 and was on backorder, with an estimated wait time of several months. For most homeowners, this type of repair is often not practical due to both cost and delay.

Repair Performed

Instead of replacing the full door, we carried out a structural repair using epoxy to rebuild and reinforce the damaged hinge area. This allowed the hinge to sit correctly again and restored proper door alignment and operation.

  • Inspected door alignment and hinge mount area
  • Confirmed structural breakage at the hinge connection point
  • Verified that full door replacement would normally be required
  • Rebuilt damaged section using epoxy
  • Restored hinge positioning and door alignment
  • Tested door operation and sealing performance

Result

The door now opens and closes smoothly, and the refrigerator seals properly again. This repair avoided the need for a costly door replacement and eliminated a long wait time for backordered parts, restoring normal cooling performance.
