How to Maintain Your Freezer
Want to keep your freezer in the best shape? Here are a few freezer maintenance tips from our repair experts:
Keep your freezer at the proper temperature.
Health Canada recommends freezer are set to 4°C (40°F) or colder. It’s also recommended that freezers are set to -18 °C (0 °F) or lower. These cold temperatures help prevent bacteria growth.
Keeping your freezer temperature consistent has another benefit too: it will help extend the lifespan of your freezer.
Keep the freezer’s condenser coils clean.
Many freezer issues are caused by dirty condenser coils. When they get covered in dust, they become less efficient at removing heat from your appliance.
To keep your freezer clean, vacuum your freezer condenser coils every 6 months. Before cleaning your condenser coils, make sure to unplug the freezer first. The condenser coils are usually found either behind or underneath your freezer.
Check your freezer’s door seals regularly.
If your freezer isn’t staying cold, a loose door seal is the most likely culprit. A loose door seal also wastes energy, as your freezer has to work extra hard to stay cold.
Make sure your seals are kept clean so that food residue doesn’t weaken the seal. If you’re worried the seals aren’t tight enough, try passing a thin sheet of paper through the seal. If a sheet of paper can pass through the seals, they need to be repaired
Keep your freezer at least half full.
An empty freezer takes more energy to keep cold, and is more likely to fluctuate in temperature. Therefore, keep your freezer full of food and drink. This will help your freezer stay cold, as the cold food and drinks absorb warm air.
Keep your freezer clean.
Food and mold buildup can do damage to your freezer in a variety of ways, so keep your freezer as clean as possible to extend its lifespan.
If your freezer has an ice or water dispenser, remember to clean and change the filters on a regular basis.
Freezer Repair FAQs
Here are the most common freezer repair questions we receive from our clients:
How many years should your freezer last for?
In our experience, freezer have a lifespan of 15 to 30 years, depending on the make and model and how much care they receive over time.
Should I pay to repair my freezer or buy a new one?
Of course, this will depend on the age and condition of your freezer , and which parts are required to fix it.
When on a service call, our repairmen will be able to provide a recommendation once they’ve assessed your freezer. In general, a good rule of thumb is to buy a new freezer if the cost of repair is more than 60 to 70% the cost of buying a new one.
What is the cost of replacing a freezer compressor? Is it worth replacing?
In general, an issue with your freezer’s compressor—the most important part of your freezer’s sealed system—is a major problem. Replacing a freezer compressor is similar to replacing your car’s engine. These are usually (but not always) very expensive repairs.
There are situations in which it is worth it to repair your freezer compressor:
1. You have an expensive or high-end freezer
2. Your freezer is built in to your kitchen cabinets
3. Your freezer matches other appliances in your kitchen, making it challenging to find a replacement freezer
4. Plus, it’s always best for the environment to repair your freezer rather than get a new one!
Plus, it’s always best for the environment to repair your freezer rather than get a new one!
Why is my freezer running more often than it used to?
There are three common reasons for a freezer to run frequently: the freezer is placed too close to the wall, there’s a door that’s not properly sealed, or the freezer’s condenser coils are dirty.
How long can you leave food in a broken freezer?
An unopened freezer will keep food cold for up to 4 hours. An unopened freezer will keep your food frozen for up to 48 hours. Therefore, if your freezer isn’t working, keep the doors closed for as long as possible.
How do I safely dispose of an old freezer ?
Because of the refrigerant stored in your freezer, it’s illegal to dispose of your freezer like you would typical waste. Always contact a licensed appliance repair service to safely dispose of your used freezer unit.
